Martyr's Challenge is a top down endless horde game where the player must repel the never ending horde of slimes. To do so, they can strike the slimes using their ball and chains, with charged strikes dealing more damage and knocking them back further. And to push one's potential further, they can sacrifice a portion of health for a buff; either speed, damage, or ranged attacks. After dealing enough damage, players can heal based on the damage they deal with the next strike with a Vampiric Strike.

 

The game was made in Adobe Animate.

Design Goals

My goal with Martyr's challenge was to create an ebb and flow of player risk and power. When the player has full health, they can take more hits, making it easier to line up charged attacks without dying. However, they also lack the power to deal with multiple enemies. Therefore, they have the option to sacrifice some health for a temporary buff to better deal with more enemies while also putting themselves at greater risk of dying when setting up opportune strikes. If they've done enough damage while buffed, they should regain their health with a Vampiric Strike, thus starting the cycle over again.
